Since that wasn&#8217;t big enough, I decided to finally try the famous\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uartpastelpaper.com\/about-us\/\"><span class=\"v1s4\">UART Pastel Paper<\/span><\/a><span class=\"v1s3\">\u00a0in a roll.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"v1p2\"><strong><span class=\"v1s2\">What Makes UART Pastel Paper Unique?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"v1p3\"><span class=\"v1s3\">If you&#8217;re not familiar with it, UART Pastel Paper is a unique, high-quality surface made in England.<br \/>\nOne of its standout features is that it can be purchased in a roll, allowing you to cut it to your desired size \u2014 even for very large formats.<br \/>\nI ordered a roll from\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"v1s4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonsart.com\/en-us\/\">Jackson&#8217;s Art Supplies<\/a> (UK)<\/span><span class=\"v1s3\">, and after about two weeks, a massive, carefully packed roll of heavy paper arrived at my door.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19066\" style=\"width: 662px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19066\" class=\"wp-image-19066\" src=\"https:\/\/portraitonpastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/UART-pastel-paper-Family-pastel-portrait-04-792x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"652\" height=\"843\" srcset=\"https:\/\/portraitonpastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/UART-pastel-paper-Family-pastel-portrait-04-792x1024.jpg 792w, https:\/\/portraitonpastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/UART-pastel-paper-Family-pastel-portrait-04-232x300.jpg 232w, https:\/\/portraitonpastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/UART-pastel-paper-Family-pastel-portrait-04-scaled.jpg 1979w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 652px) 100vw, 652px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19066\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unrolling the UART Pastel Paper, UART sand paper for Big size portrait painting, <em>\u00a9<\/em>Photo Bogra Art Studio<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"v1p2\"><span class=\"v1s2\"><strong>First Impressions: Texture and a Touch of Nostalgia<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"v1p3\"><span class=\"v1s3\">The first thing I noticed was its distinctive\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"v1s4\">sanded surface<\/span><span class=\"v1s3\">\u00a0and&#8230; the smell!<br \/>\nIt instantly transported me back to my early art school days, when we learned to prepare traditional gesso for priming linen canvases. That old gesso recipe contained glue extracted from animal bones \u2014 and UART Pastel Paper carries the same authentic, slightly nostalgic scent.<br \/>\nSomething about it feels raw, real \u2014 almost like a connection to the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"v1p2\"><span class=\"v1s2\"><strong>Choosing the Right Texture: Grade 600<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"v1p3\"><span class=\"v1s3\">UART Pastel Paper comes in different textures, from very smooth to more pronounced.<br \/>\nI chose\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"v1s4\">Grade Type 600<\/span><span class=\"v1s3\">, which struck the perfect balance \u2014 delicate yet full of character, giving the work a fine surface to hold the pastel layers beautifully.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19065\" style=\"width: 662px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19065\" class=\"wp-image-19065\" src=\"https:\/\/portraitonpastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/UART-pastel-paper-Family-pastel-portrait-03-792x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"652\" height=\"843\" srcset=\"https:\/\/portraitonpastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/UART-pastel-paper-Family-pastel-portrait-03-792x1024.jpg 792w, https:\/\/portraitonpastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/UART-pastel-paper-Family-pastel-portrait-03-232x300.jpg 232w, https:\/\/portraitonpastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/UART-pastel-paper-Family-pastel-portrait-03-scaled.jpg 1979w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 652px) 100vw, 652px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19065\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">For this work I choose UART Pastel Paper,Grade Type 600 <em>\u00a9<\/em>Photo Bogra Art Studio<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"v1p2\"><strong><span class=\"v1s2\">Preparing the Surface: A Small Challenge<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"v1p3\"><span class=\"v1s3\">Cutting and stretching the paper onto a large wooden board turned out to be quite the task!<br \/>\nThe paper is heavy, and after being tightly rolled for so long, it resisted lying flat.<br \/>\nI had to use multiple strong iron clamps to stretch it properly and left it for\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"v1s4\">24 hours<\/span><span class=\"v1s3\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"v1p3\"><span class=\"v1s3\">After that, I finally had the perfect surface:\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"v1s4\">firm, smooth, and ready to work on!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I embarked on a very special project: a family pastel portrait featuring four full figures together \u2014 a mother with her sons.<br \/>\nThe composition required a lot of space \u2014 much more than the large Canson paper I usually work with (29 \u00d7 43 inches).
