Pastel portrait process of a child

This is my last portrait for 2020. Just seeing the pictures I knew it would make a beautiful portrait. This painting was made as a Christmas gift commissioned by the father of the child for his wife… He sent me several good pictures of the boy with a very sincere and natural expression, beautiful light, and color range. Good pictures make a difference! In this post, I am not planning to explain all the steps I made, but just to show visually how the portrait evolved from the beginning to the end… I decide to make some general pictures and some closeups for detail and texture. Hope you like it and can feel the joy I felt during the process of the painting.

Special greetings to all of you, that follow this blog and love the arts! Merry Christmas!

For the initial drawing, I used a CarbOthello pastel pencil. ©Photo by Bogra art Studio, 2020

As usual, I started with the light tones. Pastel portrait process. ©Photo by Bogra art Studio, 2020

I then add the mid-tones, keeping in mind the color temperature. ©Photo by Bogra art Studio, 2020

In this stage, the portrait looks like a mosaic made of thick strokes. ©Photo by Bogra art Studio, 2020

For some reason, I almost always leave the colors around the lips and the chin to be defined the latest… Pastel portrait process. ©Photo by Bogra art Studio, 2020

Adding the red tone of the lips. It is a very pleasant moment. It is important to put the exact shade of red…at this stage, the gaze also “lights up”. ©Photo by Bogra art Studio, 2020

With a finger touch, I mark the basic tone of the iris of the eyes…then, with a white pencil (Caran D´ache) I look again for the light in the eyes. Pastel portrait process. ©Photo by Bogra art Studio, 2020

I take my time to define the eyes, the eyebrows, the lip line… using different pencils for it. After that, a few small touches to soften the lines and get the feeling of a child´s skin. (Do not get overboard. It is good that the colors continue to be intense, fresh) ©Photo by Bogra art Studio, 2020

At this stage, I continue with the details…Pastel portrait process. ©Photo by Bogra art Studio, 2020

Starting the background in shades of green, ochre, puzzolis…The lines are free (following the tonal range of the picture). Pastel portrait process. ©Photo by Bogra art Studio, 2020

It is time to paint the clothes… The aubergine blue of this little outfit in very intense, that is why I prefer to mark it first. ©Photo by Bogra art Studio, 2020
